Minoxidil is a medication that is primarily used to treat male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) and, to a lesser extent, female pattern hair loss. It is available in both topical solutions and foams, which are applied directly to the scalp.

Minoxidil works by widening the blood vessels, which allows more oxygen, blood, and nutrients to reach the hair follicles, potentially stimulating hair growth and slowing down the rate of hair loss. It is not a permanent cure for baldness and its effects are typically seen after a few months of regular use.

It is also used in a higher concentration for the treatment of high blood pressure under the brand name Loniten.
